Pokey Wire
If a wire causes irritation, using a pencil eraser or a Q-tip, push the poking wire down and away from the area, or place wax on it to alleviate the discomfort.
Soreness
When you first have your braces placed, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and your teeth may be tender to biting pressure for three to five days. This can be relieved by an over the counter pain medication that you normally take for a headache or similar pain.

Loose Bracket or Band
If the band/bracket is still attached to the wire, leave in place. If uncomfortable, place wax on it. If it comes out completely, bring with you to your appointment. Call our office to schedule a repair visit even if you have an upcoming appointment since repairs of this nature usually take additional time.
Lost Separator
If you lose a separator, they generally only need to be replaced if there is no longer a space present between the teeth. You can check for a space with floss, if it catches a separator should be replaced. If you need help with that, please call the office.
Palatal Expander Issues
If the expander becomes loose, call the office, especially if you are actively turning it. If you can't find the hole or are having trouble turning the appliance click the link below:
Wax
Wax is helpful during the initial placement of braces. The lips, cheeks, and tongue may also become irritated for one or two weeks as they become accustomed to the surface of the braces. You can use wax on the braces to lessen this.
